　　On Saturday 4th July, the Fettes College Guangzhou Primary School Team are excited to welcome children and their parents to take part in an active learning workshop focused on ‘Developing Maths Wizards’ – this promises to be a ‘simply magic’ experience!

　　當前大眾對STEAM課程的重視，突顯了數學在小學階段的重要性。

　　研究表明：早期數學技能比早期閱讀技能更準確地反映學生后期的學術成就(Stipek, Schoenfield, Gamby 2012)。

　　因此，小學教師需要為教授數學做好充足的準備。作為家長，我們則需要了解數學較有效、較吸引人和較新的教學方法。

　　The current emphasis on STEAM learning in education serves to underline the importance of mathematics in the Primary years. Research suggests that early maths skills are a more accurate indicator of later academic success than early reading skills (Stipek, Schoenfield, Gamby 2012). It is crucial therefore, that Primary teachers are exceptionally well-prepared to teach mathematics and that, as parents, we are well-informed about the most effective, engaging and up-to-date teaching methods when it comes to mathematics.

　　學生通過游戲展示他們對數學的直覺知識，但數學能力不會自動出現(Copley 2010)。

　　為了賦能數學思維，為學生提供適當的"腳手架"工具是很有必要的。"腳手架"必須足夠穩固以建立知識，但也需要足夠靈活以學習者能夠獨立操作。

　　只有當"腳手架"有意義并與實際情境產生聯系時，數學思維才能得到充分發展。

　　Children may naturally demonstrate their intuitive knowledge about maths in the process of play, but mathematical proficiency does not just emerge on its own (Copley 2010). In order to empower these young mathematical minds, it is necessary to provide appropriate ‘scaffolding’. The ‘scaffolding’ must be sturdy enough to build knowledge but flexible enough to be removed so the learner is able to function independently. This can only happen when the scaffolding is meaningful and in context.
